Euro-English

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

These Are The Best Fruits For Preventing Diabetes

In a study published in the BMJ in July 2013, researchers from Harvard University found that eating whole fruits can reduce the risk of developing type-2 diabetes, but some are more effective than others at warding off the disease.

The report used data from three long-running health studies that included 151,209 women and 36,173 men, where participants sent back questionnaires about their lifestyle, diet, and health — specifically any diseases they'd developed — every few years for at least two decades.

Despite Eight Calls, Police Are Unable To Nab Driver

It all unfolded when one of our colleagues tried to do the right thing.

"This person is dan-ger-ous!"

Those were the word of WUSA9 photographer Kurt Brooks, who spotted an erratic driver on his way home from work.

Florida Pastor Arrested With Nearly 3,000 Kerosene-Soaked Korans

MULBERRY, FLA. – Law enforcement officers arrested a Florida pastor Wednesday as he drove to a park to light nearly 3,000 Korans on fire to protest the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Polk County sheriff's deputies arrested Pastor Terry Jones, 61, and his associate pastor, Marvin Sapp Jr., 44, each on a felony charge of unlawful conveyance of fuel as they travelled in a pickup truck towing a large barbecue-style grill filled with Korans soaked in kerosene.

Jones had said he was heading to a nearby park to burn 2,998 Korans -- one for every victim of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Sheriff's officials said Wednesday night that Jones was also charged with unlawful open-carry of a firearm, a misdemeanor, and that Sapp faces a charge of having no valid registration for the trailer.

REPORT: HOUSE GOP LEADERSHIP PLAN PROCEDURAL TRICK TO AVOID OBAMACARE FUNDING FIGHT

Sources close to House conservative leaders have confirmed to Breitbart News that House GOP leadership is planning to cave and fund Obamacare’s implementation for at least the rest of 2013.

Text of the Continuing Resolution (CR) that will fund the government for 60-75 days will be released on Tuesday, the conservative source said, before a House vote on Thursday. The move comes abruptly as conservatives are ramping up their final push on House leadership with a big Tea Party rally outside the Capitol on Tuesday calling for Obamacare’s defunding.

Officials at Boston's Logan Airport are apologizing for holding a fire drill, complete with smoke and flames, on the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The two hijacked jets that were flown into the World Trade Center towers that day had taken off from Logan.

Gov. Deval Patrick, who did not know in advance about the drill, calls the timing of it "dumb." But he adds that he retained confidence in the leadership of the Massachusetts Port Authority, the public agency that runs the airport.

(Newser) – Huge numbers of American children have a liver disease that used to be seen mainly among adult alcoholics—and most of them don't know it, researchers warn.

Around 10% of children are now believed to have fatty liver disease, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure in some cases, the Wall Street Journalreports. Around 40% of obese children have the condition, but its prevalence is rising even as obesity rates level off; the number of normal-weight children with fatty livers has also surged over the last 20 years, studies show.

MORE TALL SHIPS COMING TO OC? Special Events Head Pitches Concentrated Effort To Lure More To Resort In Future

OCEAN CITY – More tall ships and similar vessels will be sought to come to Ocean City in the future as a result of the significant success of the El Galeon.

At the conclusion of Tuesday afternoon’s Recreation and Park Commission meeting, Special Events Superintendent Frank Miller proposed to the commission the idea of Ocean City hosting other tall ships in the future and a concerted effort being made to lure them to town.

Last month Ocean City hosted El Galeon, which was berthed at the bayside boardwalk between 3rd and 4th streets. The tall ship is a replica of the 16th Century ships that Spanish explorers sailed on to discover much of the new world.

The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After they got their tent all set up, both men fell sound asleep.

Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says, 'Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see?

'The Lone Ranger replies, 'I see millions of stars.'

What that tell you?' asked Tonto.

The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, 'Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning. Theologically, the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorological, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What's it telling you, Tonto?'

"You dumber than an Obama voter. It means someone stole the tent."

Taking A Shower May Increase Your Risk Of Cancer

Did you shower before work this morning? A study released earlier this week found that this simple act of good hygiene probably increased your chances of developing cancer later in life. The culprit is a sneaky carcinogen that has been found in nearly 100 personal care products sold by major national retailers, including a few that claim to be organic.

According to the Center for Environmental Health (CEH), 98 shampoos, soaps and other products sold by major national retailers tested positive for cocamide diethanolamine (cocamide DEA), a chemically-modified form of coconut oil used as a thickener or foaming agent that was declared a known carcinogen by the state of California last year. In many cases, tested products contained more than 10,000 ppm cocamide DEA, and one shampoo tested at more than 200,000 ppm (20%) cocamide DEA.

Colgate, Palmolive, Colomer, Paul Mitchell and many other national brands tested positive for the cancer-causing substance, including those marketed to children. CEH has since filed a California lawsuit against four companies guilty of using the chemical and sent legal notices to more than 100 other companies who are in violation of the law.

Cancer Patient's Bills Soar Due To A Flaw In Obamacare

WASHINGTON (AP) — Coping with advanced cancer, Bev Veals was in the hospital for chemo this summer when she got a call that her health plan was shutting down. Then, the substitute insurance she was offered wanted her to pay up to $3,125, on top of premiums.
It sounds like one of those insurance horror stories President Barack Obama told to sell his health overhaul to Congress, but Veals wasn't in the clutches of a profit-driven company. Instead, she's covered by Obama's law — one of about 100,000 people with serious medical issues in a financially troubled government program.

Two FBI Al-Qaeda Experts Recall Watching 9/11 From Yemen: 'We Knew We Could Have Stopped It'

MANHATTAN — Twelve years ago today, FBI agents Ali Soufan and Thomas Donlon were in Yemen hunting for the terrorists responsible for the deadly 2000 bombing of the U.S.S. Cole that killed 17 Americans.

They felt angry and helpless watching the towers collapse on a small television in the American ambassador's quarters: Few people had listened to their warnings about Al Qaeda, and their former boss, John O'Neill, the ex-FBI National Security Chief, was among those missing in the WTC rubble.

STUDENTS & FACULTY PROTEST GEORGE W. BUSH AWARD FOR FIGHTING AIDS IN AFRICA: ‘DIDN’T DO ANYTHING BUT LIE’

The University of Denver’s decision to honor former President George W. Bush for his work combating the spread of HIV in Africa prompted about 100 students and faculty to protest outside the dinner where Bush was being recognized.

Bush received the award from the university’s Josef Korbel School for international studies. More than 1,100 people attended the private fundraising dinner where Bush was present, the Associated Press reported.

Bush started the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, which has spent billions to fight HIV, as well as cervical cancer, malaria and tuberculosis in Africa and continued under the Obama administration.

But protestors, such as Kathy Joy, 63, were angry about Bush leading the country into the war in Iraq and for enhanced interrogation of terrorism suspects.

“I don’t think Bush deserves this award because he didn’t do anything but lie to the people and lie to the country,” Joy said. “Even if he did send a couple of dollars of aid to Africa, he did a lot more harm killing innocents in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

He describes the Lone Star State as a place with limited government, low taxes and a fair legal system.

"As one of these applicants I find it offensive, reprehensible and hopefully illegal that (nonpolice) personnel have access to the private information of Law Abiding firearms purchasers," Kelly wrote.

Ex-EPA Chief Lisa Jackson Denies Trying To Avoid Sunshine Laws

Former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson told Congress on Tuesday that she didn’t abuse her official email accounts, nor did she use her own private account to try to circumvent open-records laws.

And she said she tried to make sure that any business mail sent to her own private account was also forwarded to her official account, where it was subject to open-records laws.

“On one hand, there can certainly be honest and reasoned debate over my judgments, and on the other hand, there are some who want to theorize that there is a hidden agenda,” she told the House oversight committee in her prepared statement. “The principle reason I wanted to come here today is to make it perfectly clear that it was my practice to ensure that any official business conducted by me or through my email accounts was appropriately captured for record keeping purposes.”

Meet Valerie Caproni: Civil Rights Violating FBI Lawyer To Be Promoted To Federal Judge

The situation below describes something that goes way beyond the usual revolving door that now represents the core characteristic of the crony capitalist, ponzi U.S. economy. No, the likely appointment of Valerie Caproni as a federal judge in one of the most important districts in America represents an even more sinister trend, a trend that is a core characteristic of all totalitarian regimes that have ever existed. What I am referring to is the fact that all deeply corrupt regimes with tyrannical tendencies will promote and embed the nastiest, most flawed characters possible into positions of power because they will do the dirty deeds most normal, decent people would never consider. Basically, you decide to promote those who have the most destructive track records possible to serve as your praetorian guard. It was this signal that demonstrated to me that Obama was a total fraud very early in his Presidency. It was clear the moment he promoted two of the most destructive human beings in the nation to powerful financial and economic positions, Tim Geithner and Larry Summers. Well now we can add a new one to the list: Valerie Caproni.

Obama: Lowest Ratings Of Presidency

Flailing Obama slumps to lowest ratings of his presidency, as US voters see him as ‘a weak and indecisive leader’
On Tuesday night President Obama will deliver one of the most important political addresses of his presidency, trying to convince a war-weary American public to support his call for military intervention in Syria. Having casually drawn a red line in the sand on the use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime, Obama’s own credibility – not that of the United States – is on the line. But he faces an uphill struggle to win over public opinion, and is almost certainly heading for a heavy defeat on Capitol Hill, where opposition is mounting among Members of Congress.

The scale of the challenge for Mr. Obama is encapsulated in a new poll released by Fox News (conducted by both Democratic and Republican pollsters), which shows the president’s approval rating falling to 40 percent, the lowest level of support in his presidency (on par with December 2010). Obama’s disapproval stands at 54 percent, the highest negative rating he has received since taking office.

Audit Finds State Tax Information Not Always Verified, Refund Checks Not Controlled, Sensitive Taxpayer Information Not Protected

The agency that collects most Maryland taxes had lax controls over granting tax credits and refund checks, and in one case issued a $101,000 refund that wasn’t due, state auditors found. The comptroller’s Revenue Administration Division also had computer programming errors and did not adequately protect sensitive taxpayer information, according to an audit report.

Four of the auditor’s findings were problems identified in previous audits.

Responding to the audit findings, Comptroller Peter Franchot said, “We will be able to realize significant improvements in our ability to process these credits in the future due to improvements in technology. The legacy tax processing system did not allow for electronic transmission of supporting documents and schedules,” resulting in a “very labor-intensive process.”

Craig: O'Malley, Brown, Gansler Must Protect Gun Owner's Privacy

Candidate for Maryland Governor and Harford County Executive David R. Craig said using up to 200 front line employees at several state agencies to process record numbers of firearm purchase applications is the wrong approach that invites errors and security breaches.
Craig called on the Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General to develop a plan that protects sensitive information and uses sworn police officers to process a backlog of the forms required for background checks. The paperwork glut is an unanticipated consequence of some of the nation's most restrictive gun laws taking effect in Maryland next month. The additional agencies have no experience processing information on a specialized form that requires social security numbers among other sensitive information.
"Numerous state agencies with no experience in this will be tripping over themselves pretending to mop up the mess created by this ill-conceived legislation," said Craig. "Moreover, in a state with the most entrenched political monopoly in the nation, there is absolutely no incentive to do the job right, because their ultimate objective has already been accomplished which is to seek media attention and exploit tragedies."

In the wake of the Sandy Hook school shootings, Governor Martin O'Malley introduced and signed into law this year Senate Bill 281, which bans certain weapons for sale, limits magazine rounds and requires fingerprints among other restrictions. Fearing continued erosion of their second amendment rights, buyers rushed to purchase firearms. Weekly firearm purchase applications are now running over 2400 per week, a three-fold increase over that seen in recent years. The unprocessed backlog is nearly 40,000 according to the most recent Maryland State Police data. Lt. Governor Anthony Brown and Attorney General Doug Gansler, both gubernatorial candidates, endorsed the legislation and support the use of inexperienced state government workers to process the paperwork.

"The people who are now entrusted with the sensitive task of processing background check information work at agencies that enable identity theft according to the state's own auditors. Even more troubling, one of these agencies encouraged criminal activity among prison inmates," said Craig, referring to the infamous case in which correction officers enabled a criminal gang to commandeer the state-owned Baltimore City Detention Center. "The agency whose operational personnel are charged with abetting criminal activity is now privy to sensitive information on tens of thousands of law-abiding citizens."

Employees at the Departments of Health and Mental Hygiene,Transportation, Public Safety and Correctional Services, Human Resources and Juvenile Services will be assigned to the new gun processing application detail. O'Malley successfully sought a $4 million supplemental appropriation to process the paperwork avalanche.
"Marylanders have grown accustomed to the bungling of basic government functions in the O'Malley-Brown Administration," said Lt. Governor candidate and state delegate Jeannie Haddaway. "At the very least the attorney general, who claims to be in charge of consumer protection, should insist that basic security protocols are established."

A Lesson For The Busybodies

At the heart of the Left’s vision of the world is the implicit assumption that high-minded third parties like themselves can make better decisions for other people than those people can make for themselves.

That arbitrary and unsubstantiated assumption underlies a wide spectrum of laws and policies over the years, ranging from urban renewal to Obamacare.

One of the many international crusades by busybodies on the left is the drive to limit the work hours of people in other countries — especially poorer countries — in businesses operated by multinational corporations. One international monitoring group has taken on the task of making sure that people in China do not work more than the legally prescribed 49 hours per week.

Obama’s Farce

To support the president’s enforcement of his red line in Syria requires suspensions of disbelief. Here are several.

I wish it were not true, but there is scant evidence that the world, led by the U.S., went to war in the past over the use of weapons of mass destruction — whether by Gamel Nasser in Yemen or by Saddam Hussein against the Kurds and the Iranians. Understandably, the current West’s reaction, including Obama’s, to possible Syrian WMD use is calibrated mostly on the dangers of intervention, not the use of WMD per se. Thus Obama is now focusing on Syria in a way he is not, at least overtly, on Iran, the far greater WMD threat, because he believes the former could be handled with two days’ worth of Tomahawks and the latter could not. That would be understandable pragmatism if it were not dressed up in the current humanitarian bluster about red lines and the “international community.”

Obama, I think, is inadvertently doing the terrible arithmetic that the last 1,000 Syrians killed by the Assad regime pose a humanitarian crisis that demands his intervention in a way that the first 99,000 did not — on the theory that WMD represent an existential threat. (In fact, from the trenches of World War I to Hiroshima, WMD have never killed more than contemporary horrific conventional weaponry has.) So far Obama has not made that case. We can only wonder whether the forgotten hundreds of thousands butchered from Rwanda to Darfur — without so much as one Tomahawk or Hellfire launched on their behalf — might have been saved had only their killers begun their devilry with sarin gas.

How Has This Not Led To Outright Revolution Yet?

“Ladies and gentlemen. For the safety and security of all passengers, please remove your shoes as you enter the security checkpoint…”

How many times have we heard that?

Anyone who has traveled in, out, or through the Land of the Free, or airports just about anywhere in the world over the last few years, has heard this tired refrain over and over again: ‘Safety and security.’

These days, you could put ‘safety and security’ in front of just about anything and get people to readily comply.

“Ladies and gentlemen, for the safety and security of all passengers, please stand on your head and clap with your feet…”

Well, OK. After all, who is against ‘safety and security’? Only criminal terrorists, apparently.

This is now the easiest way for governments to exact their agendas... whether it’s invading new countries, monitoring all Internet activity worldwide, or bailing out the big banks at taxpayer expense.

Apparently the citizenry has become so scared that we collectively lay down and let governments walk all over us.

This NSA debacle, which is only getting worse and worse, shows beyond all doubt how brazen and unabashed their tactics will be.

They’ve been caught red-handed spying on the entire world. And not a single utterance of remorse or reform.

Instead, it’s been ‘talk to the hand’, and they’ve closed ranks around the spy agency which has stepped up its efforts even more.

From One Of Bal’mer’s Own

"As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. Don’t think for a second that al Qaeda and those who share its ideology have forgotten about New York. Images of the World Trade Center and scenes of the city are regularly displayed on jihadist Web sites and al Qaeda publications.

In just the past 10 months there have been several plots with a nexus to New York City:
